Shoes of my Life
Developed in 2023, this series was born as I reflected on what remains beneath the different roles a woman inhabits over time. In these images, shoes become a way to trace her journey, revealing background, moods, and circumstance. At times, her shoes express individuality in a world of labels; at others, they are like the unconscious mask she wears to fit social expectations. Still, beneath these roles, a quiet presence persists, like a footprint that does not completely disappear. Inspired by a poem I wrote that continues to accompany the work, the series invites viewers to consider what stays behind their own shifting roles.
my shoes carry me through my selves
in my day-to-day life
identities that shift and emerge
throughout my life:
peruvian, japanese, consultant,
wife, mother, friend,
explorer, photographer
my shoes tell my story:
my roots, stages, attachments;
my stances, moods, longings
shoes that hold memories
and, like water,
return to me when
I see them, touch them, wear them
shoes that, in their journey,
cannot conceal the truth:
behind each identity, stage, attachment,
stance, mood, and longing—
there I am
