The Woman under the Hat
This series was born in July of 2024 during a family trip to Cajamarca, in the northern Andes of Peru. From the start, I noticed that people in this area wore a distinctive kind of hat and was immediately drawn by the women I saw in the streets. They performed their daily activities seamlessly and wore these hats proudly. They looked as if they belonged to a sisterhood of hats. At first the hats seemed identical to me, until I learned that subtle variations in the brim indicate origin and social status. And so, I could not help but wonder who each woman under the hat was and whether she had dreams of her own. I felt compelled to register candid moments of her ubiquitous presence.
